In 2011, I returned (somewhat) to APBA after a hiatus of nearly two decades. I went through some old card sets that had been left behind by my older brother and looked through them. I have developed a habit of trying to "deconstruct" the formulas used to create the cards for various games and what I discovered from looking at APBA pitcher ratings shocked me. Pitcher grades were not based on something meaningful like batting average against or ERA. A pitcher who went 20-9 with a 4.50 ERA would get a better grade than a pitcher who, in limited time, went 3-5 with a 3.10 ERA. This made no sense to me, particular when I knew that the only thing a pitcher's grade affected were how many hits they allowed. There should be no connection between a pitcher's won-loss record and their grade.
I snooped around, and got into contact with some rabid APBA players who were able to fill me in on the formulas used to create cards. That being said, I used these formulas to create what I feel are more accurate pitching grades and ratings for the Basic version of the game. Some of this was also done to take old card sets into the present - for example, implementing the ZZ and K ratings.
Just be aware that these are not official grades and ratings - but I believe they may give you more accurate results for your replays.
